...actually I used to like the pre-stage moments in painting the best anyway, years ago when I studied art at the Willem De Kooning Academy, Rotterdam.
A work in progress often gained depth and craftsmanship... but meanwhile lost its looseness or its simple charm and character reflected by the energy you started it with...
I promised myself to try something new as soon as a way of working became a bit like a trick up the sleeves. To try to 'invent' an image over and over again and to except failure as an inevitable effect of artistically sincere causes.
A long ten years and some paintings and drawings later I picked up the well known but not too often crafted technique of monoprinting again and it has been sticking to me like glue ever since.
Now this was the perfect way to 'freeze' an image just when it reached perfect tension, rhythm or structure.
First experimental images reminded me of long walks up and down Cuillin Hills, Isle of Skye, train rides through swampy Dutch landscapes, or the great industrial structures of light which shine at you from the enormous Rotterdam harbour sights...
Little later I decided to keep working on this fine line between abstraction and figuration, between chaos and creation, surrealism and serenity, in a diary-like observative way.

Some people tell me that my prints somehow remind them of the classical Chinese and Japanese sumi-e paintings... I consider that the best of compliments. What's more intriguing than a lifetime's practise with brush and ink to, in the end, just be able to brilliantly brush that perfect icy mountain top in a split second...
Hope I can gather some passengers when my brushes travel eastwards (and back...)
